PASTOR’S MESSAGE

May News

“…can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?  If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.”  Luke 12:25-27

Happy EASTER!

My favorite season is Spring.  The earth is coming back to life.  Bulbs planted last year are sending out roots and making their way to the sun.  It’s lambing time for many of our farms.  Trees are beginning to bud; warmer weather has allowed more activity outdoors.  It warms my heart and my spirit feels renewed. Spencer Pride Day was a success even with the rain, because people came in spite of the weather.

So often we worry rather than pray.  It doesn’t do us any good and our worry may in fact keep us from paying attention to God’s wisdom and guidance. Sometimes we just keep uttering the same fervent prayer, hoping to finally have it granted.

A friend of mine once gave me a “Prayer Jar”. It is a milk glass container that held a pencil and pad of post-it notes inside. If I have no idea or ability to fix what troubles me, I place my prayer into the jar for God’s will and action. I don’t look at it again. This process turns my concerns, yearnings, hopes, and dreams and leaves them in God’s care.

I have witnessed relationships heal over time. I have seen God put me in the right job at the right time. I still have prayers in that jar – for the world, for family and friends, for churches.  Putting my trust that God’s agenda will be more than I imagined and will be fruitful keeps me from obsessing and allows me, like the seasons, to let growth come in God’s time and manner.

I pray that you continue to come to know the Risen Christ; that you will let God transform you and bring forth possibilities you never even imagined. May you find peace supplants your worry.  Amen.

Don’t forget to pick up your magnet so that you, too, can pray regularly for our church.

CHURCH & COMMUNITY

The Heart Sale started on April 30th.  Someone will be in the Lower Narthex before and after church services selling the hearts in honor and in memory our Mothers.  The actual cost of a single blanket is $10.00 now.   We have not increased the price of $5.00 each to cover the actual cost of purchasing one blanket.  We are leaving it up to you to decide if you wish to donate$10 instead of the $5 for each heart.  The Heart Sale will continue until Sunday, May 14th.  The proceeds from the sale will be sent to Church World Services to purchase blankets for the needy in poor countries in the world.

Your continued support will be appreciated.

DIACONATE NEWS

The Deacons met after church on April 9, 2017.

The Deacon of the month for May is Hazel Ahlquist.

We are looking for people who would like to be greeters on Sunday mornings, because of the small attendance on our committee we are asking for all church members to take part.  Please see Judy Chicoine if you would like to volunteer.

Well Easter is over and we are looking to a slower month.

The Diaconate would like to thank all who took part in Ash Wednesday.  We had a great turn out of 23 people and watched a wonderful movie.

Holy week was received well between 12 -14 people rose each day for the 8:30 AM services. Those who did the services did a superb job. Maundy Thursday service was well attended 33 adults and 3 children.

Palm Sunday was very nice with the whole church family participating in the service.

Easter Sunrise service had 43 adults and 5 children in attendance,  Easter 10 AM service attendance was lower this year than in the previous years with  59  adults, 17 worship participants for a total of 76 Adults &  8 children.

The breakfast was very good.  Thank you to Ken, Joyce, Phil & Claire.

Hope you had a nice Easter.

Next meeting will be May 14, 2017.

God bless us all,

Judy Chicoine, Chairperson

MEN’S LEAGUE

Ross Brown will be in charge of the community calendar again this year, with the help of Bob Ahlquist. The funds collected from the sale go to different charities for our church and community.

We will begin collecting the listings on May 7th.  There will be someone in the lower Narthex before and after worship service.  Due to the increase in the cost of printing the calendars we need to increase the prices for the calendar to $5.00 per calendar and the cost of each birthday, anniversary and memorial listing will now be 35 each.   Please complete the form below and return it as soon as possible.

The Mother Daughter Banquet is Saturday, May 6th.  The Men’s League prepares and serves the meal. Tickets will go on sale April 9th.

Just a reminder that the Father & Son banquet was moved to the second Saturday in June.  The Women’s Fellowship does the cooking and serving for this meal. Tickets will go on sale May 14, 2017.

Thank you and God bless,

Philip Harding, President

Reader. The Lay Reader leads the congregation in the Call to Worship and reads the scripture lesson for the day. No previous experience is necessary, and it’s a great way to share in our Sunday service. A sign up sheet is posted in front of the church office. Please feel to pick a date or two and sign up. You can also call the office at 508-885-2149 and ask us to put your name down as well.

These small, comfortable and convenient devices are connected directly to the sound system of the church via FM radio signals. Every sound spoken into any microphone in the church will be transmitted to the devise. Why miss out when you can hear every word crystal clear?  Please see one of the ushers for assistance. They will be happy to assist you.

Know Somebody in the Hospital? Please let us know…

Do you know of someone from the church who is in the hospital or at some other health care facility?    Please let us know at the church office. Due to the Federal Health Insurance Privacy Protection Act (HIPPA), hospitals and health care facilities can no longer tell us if anyone from the church is there, even if they have made their church membership known to them.  In other words, we have no other way of knowing if someone is in the hospital other than word of mouth.  Please let us know the full name that they were admitted by, what the facility name is, and if possible, what their room number is. Thank you so much for your help with the visitation ministry of the church.
